Expected by some at the end of 2024, the launch of Windows 12 could ultimately intervene later, leading Microsoft to rely longer on Windows 11.
Could the departure of Panos Panay, boss of the Windows and Surface divisions at Microsoft, have an impact on the launch of Windows 12? If we are to believe information from the specialized site Windows Centralthis event could well have led the Redmond giant to postpone until later the release of the next version of its operating system initially expected at the end of 2024. Instead, the firm is counting on an (ultimate?) major update dedicated to Windows 11.
Windows 11 24H2… instead of Windows 12, for lack of anything better?
In this case, this update would be called Windows 11 24H2, according to Microsoft’s usual nomenclature. This version of the OS was first mentioned last December thanks to a leak, and would allow Microsoft to make Windows 11 last a little longer than expected while waiting for its replacement to finally be ready.
“ According to my sources, Microsoft is targeting a September release for the 24H2 version, with the company planning to finalize this update over the summer.explains the journalist from Windows Central.
“ I’m told that Microsoft intends to market this version as an AI-centric version, in sync with the next-generation AI PCs that Microsoft has already announced will arrive sometime in 2024 », he adds.
A major update expected at the start of the school year?
As pointed out for his part Neowin, the launch of this new version of Windows should coincide with the arrival on the market of a new batch of computers, probably announced during Computex and/or at IFA. The latter would then probably ship Windows 24H2 as soon as they were released.
We also suspect that this update would be significantly more important than Windows 11 23H2, which for its part took the form of a minor update, deployed at the time through a simple EKB (enablement package).
With a market share approaching 80% on desktop computers, Windows 10 is the operating system most used by the general public. Under these conditions, why ask the question of an alternative to Microsoft’s flagship?
