With bella figura – only late, then radical: Fiat becomes an electric brand

The Italian car brand Fiat – now part of the Stellantis Group – wants to make the transition to a manufacturer of exclusively electrically powered cars by 2030. Fiat apparently wants to take the next step with the production model of the study called Centoventi, which caused a sensation at the Geneva Motor Show two years ago.

For a long time there was not much to see from Fiat in the electrical direction, but now the Italians have a squeaky clean Stromer in their range, which is actually only confused by the name: Fiat 500. It is called just like the small car with combustion engine that is still being built, but it is a completely independent vehicle that looks like a facelift of the combustion engine. In fact, it is bigger and purely electric. Initially, the Fiat 500e was spoken of (which would be a logical name), but confusingly the official name is Fiat 500.

In any case, the introduction of this small electric car a few months ago marked the start of the brand’s drastic system change. From 2025, Fiat plans to gradually thin out its range of petrol and diesel-powered cars.

Olivier François, Head of Fiat and Global Marketing Director at Stellantis, announced in a conversation with the architect Stefano Boeri about the future of urban life: “Between 2025 and 2030, our product range should gradually become purely electric. That will be a radical change for our brand. “

In return, the Italians want to expand their range of electrically powered cars for the mass market at low prices. François did not provide any information on plans for future electric vehicles beyond the new 500.

Presumably another electric model will follow next year with the Centoventi based on the new Fiat 500, which will be a kind of successor to the Panda. In 2019, the Italians presented a corresponding study at the Geneva Motor Show. In addition, Fiat has the group’s electric models from the French Stellantis brands and Opel available.
