Boris Becker celebrates comeback as “super coach”

Boris Becker is celebrating great success as a coach with Novak Djokovic, and now the German tennis idol is apparently returning: The Dane Holger Rune will rely on Becker’s services as a “super coach”.
According to a media report, Boris Becker is joining the coaching team of Danish tennis professional Holger Rune. As the TV broadcaster Sky reported, the 55-year-old will be working as a so-called super coach alongside the current number six in the world rankings at selected tournaments. However, Lars Christensen will continue to be the Dane’s coach. The 20-year-old posted a group photo on Instagram with himself, Becker and his team. “Great training week in Monaco,” wrote Rune. There was no response from Boris Becker when asked.
Becker was most recently back on duty as a television pundit after being released from prison for tax offenses in Great Britain last December. As a coach, the former world-class player celebrated success with the 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic between 2013 and 2016. Under Becker, the Serb collected six of his 24 Grand Slam successes. “The goals we set for ourselves at the beginning of our collaboration were fulfilled. I would like to thank Boris for his cooperation, his teamwork and his dedication,” Djokovic wrote at the time about the separation.
“It just didn’t work out”
Rune recently separated from star coach Patrick Mouratoglou after a few months. Serena Williams’ former coach only joined the Dane’s team in October 2022. “It just didn’t work out,” said Rune’s mother Aneke. “Now it’s important that Holger finds the right team that he has for a long time. He has decided that it’s not with Patrick.”
The 20-year-old Rune, who won three tournaments last year and climbed to number four in the world rankings, is currently in the first crisis of his young career: Since reaching the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in July, he has only been able to play one match on the ATP Decide on the tour for yourself.
