The ranking of smartphone sales puts the spotlight on Samsung, to the detriment of Apple which, in a rising market, stands out for its own fall. The reason: faltering sales of the iPhone.
Good news on the smartphone market, sales are on the rise again! After a gloomy 2023 (-5%), the lowest in a decade, the first quarter of 2024 saw cell phone shipments increase by 7.8% worldwide, to reach 289 million. If Apple had ended the year with a bang, the apple brand suffered in the first three months of 2024, with a drop in its iPhone sales of almost 10%. Result: Samsung takes advantage of this and once again becomes world number one in sales.

Samsung ejects Apple from the throne of smartphone sales leaders
“ While Apple managed to conquer first place at the end of 2023, Samsung managed to assert itself as the leading smartphone supplier in the first quarter », Explains Ryan Reith, of the prestigious IDC firm. The latter, who published his sales study on Monday April 15, 2024, adds that the smartphone market “ emerges from the turbulence of the last two years “.
Symbol of this market recovery, Samsung quickly regained its place as world leader. With 60.1 million mobiles sold, the South Korean giant is almost stable (-0.7%) compared to its figures from last year to the same year, maintaining a market share of 20.8%. A success to be credited to the new Samsung Galaxy S24.
Behind, Apple therefore plunged 9.6% with 50.1 million mobiles sold. The Cupertino company, increasingly in competition with Android smartphone manufacturers and Chinese brands, enjoys a market share of 17.3%.
Behind the two behemoths, Chinese manufacturers are pushing hard
On the podium, Xiaomi continues to assert its authority, with a place that is not stolen since although it jumped 33.8% over one year, the Chinese manufacturer is stable compared to the fourth quarter of 2023: 40.8 million smartphones sold compared to 40.7 million. Xiaomi now reaches 14.1% market share.
In fourth place, we find the mysterious Transsion, which has been disrupting the market for several months and ahead of players like Oppo, Vivo and others. Transsion now has a 9.9% market share and 28.5 million smartphones sold worldwide in the first quarter. The Shenzhen-based manufacturer, like Huawei, operates under the Itel, Infinix and Tecno Mobile brands. Its growth over one year is crazy: 84.9%!
Oppo ranks fifth among manufacturers, and makes its return to the global elite of manufacturers, ejecting Vivo (5e of sales in the fourth quarter of 2023) by the way. Note for Oppo a drop of 8.5% in sales over one year, to 25.2 million and 8.7% market share over the first three months of the year.
