Put on the scales, check your weight, done. It can be that simple. So-called body analysis scales now go far beyond weight, also calculate body composition and thus make a statement about the proportion of muscles and fat. The French company Withings has now presented a new version of its scale that can do even more at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which begins on January 5, 2022 in Las Vegas. the Withings body scan Thanks to an additional handpiece, it improves the analysis of body composition and records data on the health of the cardiovascular system and nerves.
Hand part for the analysis of the upper body
Compared to previous Withings scales, the Body Scan has grown: It also has an extendable handle with two electrodes on both sides – similar to professional body analysis scales in doctor’s offices or fitness studios. In bioimpedance analysis (BIA), the scale sends a weak electrical signal through the body to estimate body composition. the Body scan sends the signal through the upper body thanks to a handle. In this way, according to the manufacturer, the new scale is able to achieve the segmental body composition to be issued separately for arms, legs and torso.
Libra makes a statement about heart health
The body scale offers three functions for heart health:
- Heart rate: The body scales determine how often the heart beats per minute.
- Heart rhythm examination via EKG: Like some smartwatches, including the Apple Watch EKG, the Withings Body Scan records an electrocardiogram (EKG). Due to the 14 electrodes in the scales, it is – unlike smartwatches – not a one, but a one 6-lead ECG. This is used to detect the dangerous cardiac arrhythmia atrial fibrillation, which is the cause of strokes.
- Vascular age using pulse wave analysis: The scales estimate the condition of the blood vessels depending on the age. An analysis of the pulse wave speed (PWV) serves as the basis. The manufacturer classifies the measured values as “optimal”, “normal” and “suboptimal”. Because PWV is related to blood pressure and the degree of hardening of the arteries, according to Withings, the value is used for the early detection of heart disease.
Withings offers access to healthcare professionals in the app: users can obtain medical recommendations in the fields of cardiology and diabetes if necessary.
Body scan gives evidence of peripheral neuropathy
Every third person with diabetes develops a nerve disorder. In neuropathy, smaller nerve fibers are damaged. The Body Scan uses its electrodes to check nerve activity by examining the sweat glands.
LC display and rechargeable battery
According to the manufacturer, the Withings Body Scan has a battery life of one year. It can then be recharged using a USB cable. The LC display shows the results on the scales. All values end up in the Withings Health Mate app for iOS and Android.
