Bad news for the French women’s basketball team. A few hours before their first match of the Women’s Basketball World Cup, Les Bleues lost their main offensive weapon: Marine Johannès. Despite the injury of the latter, the basketball players intend to win their match against Australia.

For the opening of the Women’s Basketball World Cup, it’s carnage among French basketball players. Latest package to date: that of Captain Marine Johannès, the main offensive weapon of the Blue in the words of the coach, Jean-Aimé Toupane. The player injured her thigh during a training match. Bad luck for the team which is in a very complicated pool with, in particular, as opponents, the Japanese, Olympic vice-champions, and the Australians, who play at home.

“We will try to take advantage of it”

“Maybe we can create a surprise in this match, I hope,” said Gabby Williams. “And, in addition, we don’t put a lot of pressure on ourselves. So, we will try to take advantage of it. And when we play with this state of mind, good things happen”, continues the Franco-American.

Goal for basketball players: go as far as possible. Officially, Les Bleues are aiming for the podium. But for this French team decimated by injuries, getting out of the pool of qualifications would already be a small feat. Jean-Aimé Toupane’s players will face the Australian basketball team this Thursday at noon (Paris time).
