“Press photo of the year 2021” – crosses without names
Canadian photographer Amber Bracken scooped the grand prize for the best press photo of the year. The winning photo shows red dresses hanging from wooden crosses commemorating the children who lost their lives at the Kamloops Indian Residential School. Like similar schools in Canada, the Catholic boarding school served to assimilate indigenous children. The jury’s verdict on the haunting photo is: “It’s an image that burns into your memory”.
