X (Twitter) attacks WhatsApp by stealing two flagship functions

X will soon offer audio and video calls on the application, one more step towards Elon Musk’s dream of transforming Twitter into a “super app”.

For several months, Elon Musk has wanted to introduce audio and video calls to X, with the intention of transforming the application into “global directory“. The functionality is now available to some users on the iOS version of X, before a more global deployment on Android and PC (macOS and Windows).

Making calls with X will soon be possible

Audio and video calls will be integrated with private messaging, allowing you to contact any user on the app (as long as their privacy options allow it). No phone number is needed, unlike WhatsApp.

The 9to5Mac site confirms that the feature uses the iOS CallKit API, so calls via X will be able to appear on your lock screen.

According to a first screenshot shared by user DogeDesigner, it is possible to authorize calls from people already in your address book, verified users or simply those you follow.

Obviously, calls via X could be paid for and be part of the Premium offer of the application (via The Verge). Elon Musk has made no secret of it, monetization is now a priority for the billionaire who last month even mentioned a global subscription for all users.

A feature activated by default

This update is part of a more global approach to transformgreat app» à la WeChat, drawing inspiration from social networks, payment applications and instant messaging.

Enabled by default, this feature can be deactivated by going to your private messages and clicking on the cogwheel to display the settings.
