Free Xbox One games without Xbox Live Gold
Microsoft has changed its policy and decided to make free-to-play games with online multiplayer available to all Xbox players. You no longer need an Xbox Live Gold membership to play these titles. For example, you can play these games without a Live Gold subscription:
Free weekends
Free weekends are an ideal opportunity for you to play some of the biggest blockbuster titles without paying. You will have access to full versions of games for Xbox One or Xbox Series X / S for several days. So you can often play a full trial before you buy. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
You can test Assassin’s Creed Odyssey for free until December 20th at 8 p.m. In the action adventure you will experience an alternative version of the Peloponnesian War in ancient Greece. If you like the game, you can then buy it in the store at significantly lower prices.
Call of Duty Vanguard
The shooter Call of Duty Vanguard, however, is available to you a little longer. You can test the latest offshoot of the CoD series until December 21st. If you buy the game afterwards, your progress will not be lost.
Free DLC and in-game content for Xbox One
Every now and then you will also get free DLCs (downloadable content) or in-game items for Xbox One games. In order to use these, you usually have to own the main game.
For example, you will receive the DLC Fallen Ghosts for Ghost Recon Wildlands for free for a short time. In addition to free games, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate also includes free DLC.

But even aside from time-limited promotions, you have a variety of options to play Xbox One games for free. For example, you can find lots of good free-to-play titles in the Microsoft Store. And there aren’t just any average games.

Get many more free hours of play with Xbox One Demos. Well-known publishers such as EA, Capcom, Square Enix or even Microsoft publish test versions of almost every major Xbox One game. With it you can often play several hours of trial before buying.
We would particularly like to recommend the demos for Resident Evil 2, Forza Horizon 2, Halo Wars 2 and Kingdom Hearts 3. As you can see, there are some real blockbusters among them.
Xbox One: Free game days and events
If you haven’t had enough, take part in the regular Free Play Days on Xbox One. If you have an Xbox Live Gold subscription, you can try out various games on selected weekends. Often you can play the titles over the weekend without restrictions and even online.
Just like traditional free weekends, it’s easy to miss these promotions. But don’t worry, we’ll always keep an eye on the Free Play Days for you. You will find every new campaign here in this overview. Games from previous Free Play Days were for example Fallout 76, The Division 2 or The Crew 2.
Admittedly, these free play events are not completely free because you need an Xbox Live Gold subscription from Microsoft. This will cost you around 60 euros a year, but in addition to the free play events, you will also benefit from monthly free games, the Games with Gold.
Download free games thanks to Games with Gold
The Games with Gold are free monthly video games that you can download for your Xbox One. You get three to five full price games. This corresponds roughly to the equivalent of 100 to 150 euros, which means that the subscription price of around 60 euros per year is easily profitable again. In any case, you need a gold membership to be able to play online at all.
Games with Gold for December
Microsoft has announced the Games with Gold for December and has already unlocked some titles for free:
- The Escapists 2 (December 1st – December 31st)
- Tropico 5 – Penultimate Edition (December 16 – January 15)
- Orcs Must Die! (December 1st – December 15th)
- Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet (December 16 – December 31)
But there are also games that you can get for free through your Xbox Live Gold membership alone, but have nothing to do with Games with Gold. If you are a subscriber, you can get, for example, the multiplayer role-playing game Neverwinter Avernus for free for Xbox One.
Finally we want to mention the Xbox Game Pass. It’s not free with a price of around 13 euros per month, but you’ll definitely get a good deal with it. The digital access pass gives you access to a constantly growing collection of the best Xbox One games, as well as PC titles. Conveniently, Xbox Live Gold membership is included in Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
From time to time Microsoft even offers the Game Pass at particularly low prices. Sometimes you even pay significantly less than the usual 13 euros. For a limited time, you can get the three-month Ultimate version of the pass for just one euro.
