Chatting with ChatGPT is getting easier, as OpenAI this week announced the ability to converse by voice with the AI-powered chatbot. Like in a real conversation, you can now dictate your questions and listen to the answers.
ChatGPT is a conversational AI model capable of interacting with users in a fluid and natural way. Thanks to its advanced natural language processing capabilities, it can answer even the most complex questions.

Announced this Tuesday on X (formerly Twitter) by OpenAI, the company behind the famous chatbot, the new functionality is available to all ChatGPT users, even without a ChatGPT Plus subscription, through its mobile application.
How to use voice chat?
If you have a ChatGPT Plus or Enterprise subscription, you were able to discover the voice chat functionality a few months ago. But now you can use it even if you use ChatGPT for free. However, this option is only available in the app, and not on the ChatGPT website.
If you don’t yet have the app for your smartphone or tablet and want to try the voice version of the chatbot, download the ChatGPT app on iOS/iPadOS or Android.
Once the app is installed on your device, open it. Then tap on the headset icon. On first use, you will have to choose a voice between Jennifer, Ember, Cove, Sky or Breeze. You can click on each voice to hear it before confirming your choice.

Next, state your question or request. In return, ChatGPT states its response. You can then continue chatting in this way to continue the conversation. Press the X to end voice chat, and replies appear in text on the chat screen.

A turbulent context
The opening of this new functionality to everyone took place in a particularly eventful context for OpenAI.
Last week, the company surprised the world by announcing the dismissal of its CEO and co-founder Sam Altman for rather vague reasons. Over the weekend, Sam Altman and Greg Brockman – also a co-founder – were recruited by Microsoft, a major investor in OpenAI, to lead a new AI research team.
The future of OpenAI then seemed in danger, with more than 500 employees (out of 778 in total) threatening to resign if the company did not reinstate its two co-founders. Finally, we learned on Wednesday morning that Sam Altman was returning to his place as CEO at OpenAI, alongside Greg Brockman, and that the board of directors was completely changed – with the exception of a single member.
An original announcement
The least we can say is that OpenAI was able to draw humor from the situation. To announce the availability of voice chat, the company posted a voice message on X asking ChatGPT: “It’s been a long night for the team and we’re hungry. How many pizzas should I order for 778 people? »
Want to know ChatGPT’s answer? “Assuming an average of three slices per person and that each pizza provides approximately 12 slices, you should order approximately 195 pizzas. » The chatbot then offered to help select a pizzeria to order from. To be sure, ChatGPT has less humor than its creators. But it may have enabled a neighboring pizzeria to generate good turnover.
