2024 - "You're a murderer like your friend": violent pass of arms between the family of Cédric Chouviat and a police officer in TPMP

This Tuesday, the TPMP team received the family of Cédric Chouviat – who died following a brutal police check – in front of Michel Thooris, general secretary of the France police union. Between the two parties, the tone quickly rose.

On January 3, 2020, after a police check in Paris, Cédric Chouviat, 44, found himself tackled to the ground by three agents. Following two strangulation keys and a belly tackle, the man felt unwell and his heart stopped a few tens of seconds later. Taken to hospital, he was officially declared dead two days later. This Monday, two years after the death of Cédric Chouviat, a medical expert report calls into question the responsibility of the police in the death of the father of the family, establishing a direct link between the intervention of the agents and the cardio-respiratory arrest of the victim. The same day, as part of this revelation, Liberation had access to a video, directly filmed from Cédric Chouviat’s cell phone on the day of the accident. The scene, already known from the file, lasts about ten minutes and transcribes what the IGPN report already noted in 2020: Cédric Chouviat, pinned to the ground, motorcycle helmet still on his head, repeats several times: “I’m suffocating”. For the family of the courier, – who criticizes the police for not having stopped their intervention despite the protests of their relative -, the facts must be reclassified as intentional violence, even homicide. As a reminder, three of the four police officers who participated in the check were indicted in July 2020 for “manslaughter”, which constitutes an offense, but not a crime.
