Considered out of reach by some, the YouTube Partner Program, which gives the possibility of monetizing its videos, has just been relaxed.

This is great news for YouTube’s small content creators, and one more after the recent relaxation of the sanction policy. For several years, Google’s video platform has offered YouTubers access to resources and monetization features through the “YPP”, the YouTube Partner Program. The latter allows in particular to share the income of the ads broadcast on the videos that you host on the site. But while it was sometimes difficult, if not impossible, to validate all the eligibility criteria, the service has just revised them downwards.

YouTube makes it easier to access monetization

Until now, two cumulative numerical conditions had to be met to become a member of the monetization program, and thus start generating money with its YouTube content, videos, lives or Shorts:

  • A minimum of 1,000 subscribers;
  • 4,000 valid watch hours on public videos in the last 12 months OR 10 million valid views on public Shorts in the last 90 days.

These criteria were for many small creators perceived as too high, thus depriving access to remuneration for many channels with sometimes very qualitative content, but little seen on the preferred platform of young people. New criteria have been in effect since August 29, 2023 for French creators:

  • A minimum of 500 subscribers;
  • 3,000 hours of viewing in the last 12 months, or 3 million views on public Shorts in the last 90 days;
  • 3 public videos in the last 90 days;
  • No active violations of the Community Rules of Conduct.

But be careful, and the lines that follow are very important, because these criteria actually only open early access, that is to say partial, to the YouTube Partner Program. The first criteria mentioned (1,000 subscribers + 4,000 hours of viewing or 10 million views of Shorts) are still in force to have full access to the program.

Some perks will only be accessible by meeting the highest criteria

With the relaxed criteria, you will have access to several advantages, such as:

  • access to fan funding (Super Chat, Super Stickers and Super Thanks);
  • paid channel subscription (for which the creator then offers certain benefits to paying members).

From this early access to the YPP, are therefore excluded:

  • shared revenue from ads found in video ads;
  • and revenue from YouTube Premium.

To have access to these last two incomes, you will still have to meet the conditions of having 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 hours of viewing, or 10 million views of Shorts.

However, early access to the YouTube Partner Program could provide some extra motivation for some creators who were beginning to despair of ever being able to generate revenue from their videos. ” Creators are the lifeblood of YouTube, and we strive to make it the most rewarding place for them—creatively, emotionally, or financially. We hope this loosening of the eligibility criteria will support creators who are at the beginning of their journey on YouTube, paving the way for a new generation of content creators. “Writes a spokesperson for the platform.
