YouTube found a new way to copy TikTok, but not as well

YouTube has just announced the arrival of a new section on the creator channels page, the name of which will mean something to you if you are an avid TikTok user. In fact, it will be called “For you”, like the most popular tab of the Chinese application. Except that it is nowhere near as easy to access.

If YouTube is constantly offering new features to maintain the interest of its users, it is clear that lately, the platform’s new features are often inspired by what makes TikTok so special. Many certainly made fun of Shorts, an almost perfect copy, as popular as it is expensive, of the Chinese application’s news feed. But these are not the only “inspiration” that YouTube has tried.

Why stop now while everything is going so well ? Today, YouTube announced on its X account (Twitter) the arrival of a new section on its site and application. The name is enough to make TikTok regulars smile. Indeed, it will be titled “For you”, exactly like the tab on which users of the Chinese social network spend most of their time. As one can imagine, the principle will be (substantially) the same here.

YouTube will also offer a For you section, but less practical

If you have never set foot (a finger?) on TikTok, the tab For you is where TikTok’s algorithm works all its magic. It offers infinite videos, based on the user’s tastes and interactions, so that they (almost) never come across a video that does not interest them. YouTube therefore intends to do the same thing, but in a much less intuitive way.

On the same subject — YouTube will recommend fewer videos harmful to the mental health of adolescents

Indeed, the For you version of YouTube will be located on the home page of the videographers’ channel, above all the other sections already present (playlists, popular content, etc.). Instead of scanning the entire YouTube for content personalized to the user, the idea here is to do precisely that, but only within the channel of the videographer concerned. This must first have activated a setting allowing the display of this new section.

YouTube therefore seeks to save viewers time by directly offering them videos that they should like, based on their viewing history. For creators, on the other hand, this functionality is double-edged, because it risks making less popular content even more invisible by only highlighting those that perform better than average.
