The battle for the users’ favor is entering a new round: YouTube now has a new form of short video.

There are two top dogs in the field of video portals: YouTube and TikTok. For years, YouTube has been the go-to place for video content of all kinds, and short and creative clips have recently made TikTok particularly popular on smartphones. However, with new functions, the platforms want to outrun the competition. Now comes YouTube shorts to Germany and is integrated into the in-house app.

While short videos could of course also previously be published on YouTube, the shorts are clips of up to 60 seconds that users can create and share directly on their smartphone. Various tools and options are now available to users for this purpose.

Similar to TikTok, users can record videos with music, for example, and sample audio tracks from other content. YouTube works with more than 250 labels and publishers, including Universal, Sony and Warner. Users can also line up clips, change the speed of the recording and add texts or filters, among other things.

When can I start using YouTube Shorts?

First presented in September 2020, YouTube has now announced that it will be rolling out a beta version of shorts in more than 100 countries. The starting shot will be given today, July 12th, and the function should be available to all users in Germany by July 14th.

TikTok, meanwhile, goes the opposite way. After only up to 60 seconds could be shared for a long time, it was announced at the beginning of July that in the coming weeks, after appropriate tests, the function would be rolled out worldwide to record, edit and publish longer clips of up to three minutes.
