Google shows its teeth in the face of ad blockers on YouTube. After experimenting with blocking extensions of this type, the platform deployed a new policy. From now on, it is necessary to disable adblock to continue viewing content for free.
Goodbye ad blockers on YouTube
In The VergeChristopher Lawton, YouTube communications manager, announces that he has “launched a global effort” to encourage users to allow ads or try YouTube Premium.
YouTube now prohibits access to people with a blocker activated on their browser. A pop-up window explains having detected the tool, the “playing videos [étant] blocked if enabled or if YouTube is not on the allowlist”.
Stressing that advertisements allow billions of people to consult it, the platform indicates two options: authorize advertisements or try YouTube Premium and its multiple advantages – including the removal of advertisements – for €12.99/month.
A practice without consent that is a stain in Europe
YouTube’s practice of identifying the presence of an adblock would nevertheless be contrary to the GDPR. Privacy expert Alexander Hanff explains to The Register that the service has introduced JavaScript code, which makes it possible to detect the presence of ad blockers on browsers without the user’s consent.
In 2016, the European Commission had already responded to Alexander Hanff regarding the use of scripts to detect ad blockers without consent. She emphasized at that time that this was contrary to the GDPR.
