Zack Snyder explains why Rebel Moon already has a Director’s Cut

Zack Snyder has a history with the Director’s Cut. This time, he wanted to anticipate this long version, which will offer additional scenes to (future) fans.

Zack Snyder is betting big on his “dark Star Wars”, Rebel Moon. This science fiction film project is divided into two parts, the first of which (child of fire) is due out in December 2023. On the program, Sofia Boutella — Kora — leads a rebellion against a tyrannical empire in a galaxy far, far away. It will be streaming on Netflix.

Although the film has not yet been released, we already know that a second version of Rebel Moon will be available on the streaming platform. This new version will be longer by about an hour, for each of the two films, and classified R-Rated (not recommended for children under 17 due to violent content).

There is a strangeness here: a Director’s Cut is generally used to show another version, corrected by its director, of a film that has already been released. But, we know the passion of Zack Snyder for these formats. Precisely, on the TUDUM site, linked to Netflix, the director explains himself.

Zack Snyder first explains that it is above all a long version: ” You really see a lot of things there. It’s a bit more detailed. The Director’s Cut is a deep dive, which I’ve notoriously done throughout my career. »

It also raises its own liabilities with this format. ” I don’t know how I ended up in this Director’s Cut thing, but what I can say is that for me, Director’s Cuts have always been things I’ve had to fight for in the past and which no one wanted. No one… except the fans. We remember the “affair” of the Snyder Cut, for Justice League. Fans battled for a long time, before this famous version was finally put together and broadcast by HBO Max.

“We shot scenes only for the Director’s Cut”

Rebel Moon would be a form of creative revenge. ” With Netflix, we shot scenes just for the Director’s Cut. In that sense, it’s really a revelation because it gives a second boost to the biggest fans, a real discovery that they wouldn’t have had. [autrement]. I am very enthusiastic ! “, he says.

Zach Snyder therefore considers this long version as a gift, already imagined in advance, to those who would like to dive a little more into this universe after having liked the classic, shorter and accessible versions of the first two films. But, unlike previous Director’s Cuts, these won’t mean he didn’t do what he wanted in the first place. It’s more of an extension than a fix.

This is consistent with Snyder’s vision for Rebel Moonsince he intends to make it a real long-term franchise (with other films, a spin-off series, a video game, a graphic novel, etc.).
