Nothing now seems to be stopping the frantic race of companies towards cloud computing. Nothing ? Except perhaps the headaches of the CIO and business departments when it comes to migrating to the cloud. And make it work. Yes, the cloud rush is likely to outpace organizations’ ability to keep up.
This is what emerges in any case from a recent survey of 300 IT managers by the Harvard Business Review.
From internal servers to cloud computing
The stakes are high. At present, most companies still have the majority of their computer systems in-house, that is to say in the form of servers stored in computer rooms, also known as datacenters.
But the tsunami of cloud computing, that is to say the migration of these servers to external and specialized players is coming. Within two years, most businesses will run primarily from the cloud, the survey predicts.
A figure to illuminate the trend: 65% of CIOs expect that more than 60% of their IT portfolio will reside in the cloud within two years.
A hybrid world
Still, this massive phenomenon should not hide a reality that remains. No, nobody is going to put everything in the cloud. The emerging world is a hybrid world. “Most respondents use the cloud in addition to their on-premises systems,” the study authors say. “And they plan to maintain such a hybrid infrastructure in the near future. »
And it is there, precisely, that it goes wrong. Because the management of hybrid environments is particularly complex.
But the rush to the cloud above all raises the question of the shortage of skills. Hiring the right team to manage hybrid environments has become the number one problem for CIOs.
Skills shortage
Already more than 60% of IT leaders say they struggle to keep up with the rapidly changing technology roles and responsibilities required for cloud adoption.
The authors of the study advise not to rely in this context on the easy solution of outsourcing. Especially with cloud service providers.
Why ? It’s very simple. The survey reveals that only 21% of IT managers say their cloud providers provide all the tools and processes needed to manage and optimize their cloud computing environments.
