A new TikTok recipe is currently causing a real hype: smashed potatoes. The crispy baked potatoes should not only taste incredibly good, they are also an excellent snack substitute for the high-calorie potato chips in the evening. The potatoes are served with various dips and optional fresh herbs.

You want to know if they are worth the hype? All you need are three ingredients and you’re good to go!

Recipe for smashed potatoes

ingredients

  • 500 g small to medium-sized potatoes (mainly waxy)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • coarse salt

optional: thyme, rosemary, paprika powder, pepper

preparation

  1. Clean the potatoes and cut out any brown spots. Then place in a large saucepan and cover with water. Add some salt to the water and cook the potatoes until soft, about 20-30 minutes.
  2. Drain off the water and let the hot potatoes evaporate briefly. Preheat the oven to 220 degrees top/bottom heat or 200 degrees convection. Place cooked potatoes on a parchment-lined baking sheet and roughly flatten with the bottom of a small bowl so they are flat but remain in one piece. They then have the perfect shape to be able to snack on them with your fingers and dip them in all kinds of dips.
  3. Brush the mashed potatoes with olive oil, salt and optionally season with your favorite herbs and spices such as rosemary, thyme, paprika powder or pepper and bake in the oven for about 30 to 45 minutes until crispy – your healthy snack is ready for a cozy evening on the couch .

As a dip, we recommend a mixture of yoghurt and crème fraîche seasoned with salt, pepper and fresh herbs. A classic guacamole, homemade mango ketchup or a herbal pesto also go well with it.

Since the recipe has become a real hype, some TikTok users have already developed it further and prepare the crispy potatoes with Parmesan, grated cheddar, Edam cheese or mozzarella, for example, or season them with chili flakes, garlic butter, garlic powder or garlic powder before baking a marinade of oil and fresh herbs.
