The 3rd and last training of the Olympic downhill will be stopped after 3 drivers. Strong gusts of wind are to blame.
It took 20 minutes for the exercise to stop. Once again the wind thwarted the downhillers in Yanqing. A postponement was out of the question due to poor forecasts. In the 3rd and last training session for the men’s Olympic downhill race on Sunday night, it was over after only 3 athletes. And of this trio, only Aleksander Kilde took the task seriously.

The Norwegian co-favorite continued his journey over the entire route. He was almost 3 seconds ahead of Matthias Mayer (AUT). The third starter, Christof Innerhofer (ITA), slowed down halfway through the run. This was planned that way, the South Tyrolean explained in an interview. He also predicted a close race on Sunday: “The snow is very easy to drive, it will certainly be tight.”
The fastest in training, Kilde, described the crux after his rapid run including the 46-meter jump: “The wind was not stable, but came in individual passages. Some of the jumps went really far.” The Swiss did not come to a final test drive. Especially Marco Odermatt, who had shown himself to be at a loss after the 2nd practice session and 38th place, was denied further insights.
At least the wind forecasts for the race are more favourable. The wind is expected to weaken in Yanqing in the course of the morning.
