(Reuters) – New York and its region were shaken Friday morning by a magnitude 4.8 earthquake, according to the American Geological Survey (USGS), a rare phenomenon in the eastern United States, an area of weak seismic activity.
Metropolitan police reported no damage. The Holland Tunnel, one of the three major routes linking New York to New Jersey, was closed for inspection and flights departing from the city were delayed until midday.
The earthquake occurred at 10:20 a.m. (2:20 p.m. GMT) near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, at a depth of 4.7 kilometers, according to the USGS.
The tremor was felt as far away as Pennsylvania and Massachusetts.
