a collective of traders calls for “fairness of treatment” against Amazon

After “Black Friday”, it is the Amazon summer sales that provoke the indignation of a collective of French traders. In a column published in the Sunday Newspaper (JDD) of June 13, “Save our traders” denounces the ” provocation “ What constitutes, according to them, the announcement of the summer promotions of the online shopping giant Amazon on June 21 and 22, while the official sales dates in France are set for June 30.

The collective, claiming to speak on behalf of more than 500,000 local traders and one million employees, asks Bercy for a “Fairness of treatment between all forms of commerce”, in a forum entitled “Amazon’s rigged match”.

“By capturing a maximum of customers and purchasing power before consumers are allowed to take advantage of sales at their merchants, Amazon breaks this moment expected by physical stores to sell their stocks accumulated during confinement and replenish their cash”, reports the text.

A “declaration of economic war”

While Amazon ordinarily hosts a promotional event in the third week of July, the collective wonders if the American online retail giant, “Having generated 44 billion euros in turnover in Europe in 2020 and having paid no corporate tax cent in France”, so wants “To avoid the new European regulation on VAT which will come into force on 1er July “.

From 1er July 2021, will apply a reform of VAT on e-commerce, adopted in 2017 by the Council of the European Union (EU). All non-EU and EU businesses selling services and goods online to European individuals (websites, marketplaces, social networks, etc.) are affected by the reform.

“Amazon’s financial power now allows it to transgress established rules and economic balances to its sole advantage” states the text that qualifies the advancement of Amazon promotional dates as “Declaration of economic war” to which the government “Must terminate without delay”.

Judging ” urgent “ of “Restore in France an equity of treatment between all forms of commerce”, the stand points in particular “The subjection of e-commerce warehouses to the authorization of commercial exploitation which will be defended next week in the Senate as part of the climate bill”.
