Are you planning to buy a mid-range smartphone in the coming months? It is quite possible that it will bet on the Dimensity 1080. Announced this week by the Taiwanese MediaTek, this new SoC takes over from the Dimensity 920 (launched in 2021), to bring even more performance to affordable smartphones. To do this, this new chip relies both on TSMC’s 6 nm engraving and on some improvements compared to the Dimensity 920.

5G compatible, the Dimensity 1080 should materialize very soon on the market. MediaTek estimates that the first deliveries of equipped smartphones will take place in the fourth quarter of 2022.

MediaTek refines its mid-range offer

In detail, the Dimensity 1080 combines two ARM Cortex-A78 cores clocked at a maximum of 2.6 GHz, and six ARM Cortex-A55 cores clocked at up to 2 GHz. The chip also includes an ARM Mali G68 graphics part and supports LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage modules. On the image processing side, there is an ISP capable of supporting 4K HDR video encoding. This image signal processor also supports up to four simultaneous cameras and image capture up to 200MP, all without XDA Developers precise shutter lag.

Unsurprisingly, this chip is nevertheless content with a more modest configuration than that offered by the imposing Dimensity 9000+, announced in June on the high end and launched in the third quarter. The Dimensity 1080 also fits between the Dimensity 1050 and Dimensity 1300, unveiled in the spring.

Continuing MediaTek’s legacy of power and performance optimization, the Dimensity 1080 offers a full suite of advanced features that challenge expectations of a 5G smartphone’s capabilities.“, we say with a certain sobriety at MediaTek. “This new chipset is designed to further improve many of the features that made its predecessor great, including processing power, camera and video quality, and time to market for manufacturers.»
