a superhero in the footsteps of Dracula

THE OPINION OF THE “WORLD” – TO SEE

Here Sony, and the expanded universe of Spiderman. After Venom, the ambivalent alien-man (part instinctual, part rational) with very large teeth, meet Morbius, the bat-man with very large teeth, who sounds a bit snotty in French, either said in passing. Daniel Espinosa, Swedish director of Chilean origin, author of some uninteresting Hollywood films (Close security2012; Life: origin unknown, 2017), is on the move. Jared Leto, transformation actor (the Joker in Suicide Squadthe incredible Paolo in The House of Gucci) is at the incarnation. We will see that by an alchemy always a little mysterious, the film is located in the estimable average of the superhero movie.

Let’s dive without delay into the heart of the story, traditionally the most soporific part, since it is part of the vocation of the superhero film to always sing the same song to us. Consider Michael Morbius, a child with a serious blood disease that takes away the use of his legs. Having become an exceptional scientist, he is obsessed with finding the cure. What he achieves by mixing his DNA with that of a bat. Here he is, no doubt cured, endowed with prodigious strength, but alas transformed into a vampire whose appetite phases he cannot control. He will strive to tame his impulses, unlike his childhood friend (Matt Smith) suffering from the same illness as him, but victim of a murderous hubris. All of which leads naturally to the final fight of great destructive magnitude, which is truly the most disgusting thing the genre has produced.

Munchian table

That said, two virtues attach to this film. The first consists of folding the genre over to another, more classic genre, as was done recently, on the side of Warner, The Batmanwhich spreads its wings on the side of the serial killer. Morbius – whose main character shares the morbidity of the Batman played by Robert Pattinson – tackles the vampire film. And don’t do things by halves, inventing a true festival of reminiscences. The Nosferatu and other Dracula of Murnau and Coppola, the Thriller by Michael Jackson, Twilightbut again, by widening the circle, The Hunts of Count Zaroff, Dr. Jekill and Mr. Hyde, The Mask, Unbreakable Where Matrix. In doing so, Morbius pertinently defines the principle, in all respects vampiric, of Hollywood creation.

Another virtue, and not the least, is the undeniable beauty of the film, especially in the action scenes. “Bullet time” effect, lightning and fragmented, attacks of the beast, sonar which transforms the world into a sumptuous and bewildered Munchian painting, organic, arterial network, expressways which criss-cross the city, colored trails which attach in scintillating to the characters in movement, pure exhilaration of speed, carnage and light. Welcome to the contemporary world.
