Abortion: outcry from French pro-abortion associations against the American decision

French associations for the defense of the right to abortion have deplored a “dangerous signal” and a threat to women’s rights, calling for the right to abortion to be included in the French Constitution.

The reversal of the right to abortion by the Supreme Court of the United States is a “dangerous signal“and also threatens the rights of women”in the rest of the world and even in France“, estimated Friday, June 24 the French associations for the defense of the right to abortion.

This decision will have consequencesdisastrous for Americans“, but also sends “a dangerous signal that reinforces supporters of anti-abortion movementsElsewhere in the world, thus judged the High Council for Equality (HCE) in a press release. “This fundamental right remains threatened by the reactionary currents, which deploy a constant work of liberticidal lobby including within the European Union“, continues the HCE. In Poland, abortion is virtually prohibited, and in France, many “disinformation sites (on the internet) border on the offense of obstruction“, he lamented.

To guard against any attempt to interfere with women’s rights“, it is urgent “to enshrine the right to abortion in our French Constitution“, as well as in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, recommended the High Council, an independent advisory body placed under the Prime Minister. Planned Parenthood lamented him on Twitter “a concerted and calculated global effort by conservative extremists.”

“Constitutionalize” the right to abortion in France

Late Friday afternoon, around fifty people gathered at the Place de la République in Paris to defend the right to abortion. The demonstration, at the call of several feminist and leftist organizations, had been planned before the announcement of the Supreme Court’s decision. Participants carried placards proclaiming in English “Solidarity for our American sisters», «yes, our body belongs to us“, or “USA: guns have more rights than our vaginas“, noted an AFP journalist.

“We wanted to show our support for the women of the United States. The United States has significant weight as a model for the defense of fundamental rights. However, the fundamental rights of women are called into question. For us, it’s really a step backwards which is already effective in Poland and Hungary”, declared to AFP, Daniele Gaudry, militant of Family Planning and of the “collective abortion in Europe the women decide”. For Suzy Rojtman, member of the same collective: “We were in a rather rising period because abortion was authorized in Colombia, in Argentina, in Ireland. We fear a sudden stop”. The collective calls for mobilization next Saturday.

“It would be enough for France to have a parliament with a conservative majority, and abortion could be banned”, has on his side, told AFP the president of the Women’s Foundation Anne-Cécile Mailfert. To remedy this “fragility”, “we must constitutionalize this right, we have been asking for it for a long time”, she added. For its part, the HCE is also concerned about the “dangers of monopolistic production of the abortion pill”, in this case by the Nordic Pharma laboratory, “whose substantial part of the capital is now American”. This company “could face significant intimidation from anti-abortion movements” and it would therefore be appropriate to relocate to Europe, “and as soon as possible in France” the manufacture of this pill, according to the HCE.
