Actor Ahmed Benaïssa tragically dies in Cannes a few hours before climbing the steps


Drama on the Croisette. A few hours from climbing the stairs for the screening of the film Goutte d’or, actor Ahmed Benaïssa died in Cannes. He was 78 years old.

This Friday, May 20, the Cannes Film Festival was marked by terrible news. The actor and director, Ahmed Benaissa, died at the age of 78.

The latter was already in Cannes to attend the screening of the film Drop of gold in which he played, this very Friday at 7:45 p.m. Unfortunately, the actor felt unwell just hours before climbing the steps at the Palais des Festivals.

Ahmed Benaissa was a “monument” of Algerian culture

The death of the actor was announced by the Algerian Ministry of Culture. On Twitter, the Algerian writer Kamel Daoud paid tribute to this great gentleman through a sincere and touching message: “A beautiful soul, a great actor, a man without hatred and immense talent. After the play, he was on the set of the film Meursault against investigation by Malek Bensmail for one of the two main roles. Peace for Ahmed Benaissa. Rest for a creator.” he wrote.

The Minister of Culture and the Arts, Soraya Mouloudji, for her part spoke of a “monument” of Algerian culture, which she believes will leave “an indelible imprint on the world of Algerian cinema and theatre”.

Karim Leklouactor alongside Ahmed Benaïssa in Drop of goldspoke on his Instagram account about the disappearance of his colleague and friend: “All our heartfelt thoughts go out to his family and loved ones. The screening of Goutte d’or is dedicated to him”he posted.
