Adams is New York City’s new Mayor

The 61-year-old – the second black mayor in New York history – was inducted into office at the New Year’s Eve party in Times Square. As the 110th mayor, he is the successor to the unpopular Bill de Blasio, who was banned from running after two terms in office.

Adams, who had been the mayor of Brooklyn for the past few years, had prevailed in the election campaign with the promise of a balanced course between left and centrist forces. His biggest task will initially be to fight the corona pandemic. In addition, the focus is on the economic recovery of the metropolis from the crisis – the correct handling of the police, which many New Yorkers viewed critically, is likely to be a difficult task.
