Adobe unveils dress capable of changing color on demand


While Adobe is primarily known for its cutting-edge, creativity-focused software suites, the company surprised attendees at the Adobe MAX 2023 conference by giving them a sneak peek at a project it’s been secretly working on: a dress which changes color.

At the Adobe Max 2023 event, Adobe demonstrated Project Primrose, an interactive dress made up of hundreds of flexible screens whose patterns and animations can be changed in real time. Christine Dierk, a research scientist at Adobe, wore the high-tech dress when she took the stage at the event, showing how the garment could change color with the press of a button.

The dress is thus able to display unique patterns on demand, using “ reflective light diffusion modules » to create flexible, non-emissive display systems. To be more precise, the system developed by Adobe uses polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (PDLC), an electroactive substance often used in smart window technology. This energy-efficient, non-emissive material can be easily tailored to different shapes and has the ability to dynamically diffuse light, which goes beyond what e-ink and other technologies can offer.

Abobe’s dress is interactive and intelligent

Christine Dierk especially described the garment as “ digital dress that brings fabric to life “. Better yet, the presenter said that it is also possible to let the patterns created animate and that the outfit can even detect the movements of the person wearing it, by swinging and sliding the pattern in the direction the person is going.

The vision of the Primrose project is to create a wearable, adaptable and flexible dress from non-emitting textiles. This avant-garde approach allows content creators and designers to project their artistic creations onto the interactive dress, seeing it as a dynamic canvas that evolves to the rhythm of their creative impulses.
