The criticism of the VW ID.3 didn’t want to stop – VW got down to business and brought the facelift forward by a year and a half. A lot has been changed and upgraded, but we still have a long way to go before we fix one problem.
The Wolfsburg Stromer has only been on the market for two and a half years, and it has already received a major update. With a sharper exterior design, improved material quality in the interior and new software. The touch slider below the central display, which is used to set the volume and temperature, remains unlit for the time being. This makes it difficult to use at night because you can’t see it. VW already has a solution, but it will be some time before the new component can be used. It will also not be possible to retrofit it because the entire electronic structure was newly developed in the background. The unloved touch elements also remain on the steering wheel, which VW has actually already identified as “not what customers want”. Strong software, much better Materials The central touchscreen now measures 12 inches diagonally as standard. The improvements to the software – also a point of criticism – are striking. The menu structure has been revised so that the charging menu is now on the first level -Route planner. This route planning with charging stops is now much more sophisticated. You can even specify the remaining range you want to reach your destination or a loading stop. In the evaluation, the system not only takes into account the charging capacity of a station, but also whether it is currently occupied. The optional “Travel Assist with swarm data” is now also available in the ID.3. Much is soft instead of hard The materials in the interior are clear high quality, many surfaces that were previously made of hard plastic are now back-foamed as standard. A lot of velor (more precisely “the microfibre material Artvelours Eco, which consists of 71 percent recycled material”) and artificial leather is used. There is no longer any leather in the VW ID.3, not even on the steering wheel. The car is therefore completely vegan. Only on the top of the rear door panels is the plastic.Successful changes to the designThe exterior has been optically smoothed and designed more clearly. The black “moustache” at the front is omitted, it is painted more in the color of the vehicle. The hood now looks longer because the black bar under the windshield is gone and indentations on the sides further stretch the front. With a better air flow around the front wheels (Air Curtain), VW optimizes the aerodynamics. At the rear, the two-part taillights also shine in the tailgate for the first time, where previously only reflectors were fitted. As before, buyers have the choice between a large and a medium-sized battery, a small variant is to follow shortly. The electric motor is unchanged at 150 kW/204 hp, the range is up to 546 kilometers. VW has not yet announced prices. But you can assume that you won’t get the update for free.
