In response to the law ending online anonymity, SurfShark will shut down all of its physical servers in India by the end of the month.

We told you about it in mid-May, the Indian government decided to put an end to online anonymity. A law, which will come into force from June 27, notably obliges all VPN services to keep certain data of their customers for five years. This measure may not be to the liking of all Indians, and certainly not VPN providers. Surfshark follows in the footsteps of ExpressVPN by deciding to close shop in the country and announces the withdrawal of its Indian servers.

Flicage that goes against the principle of a VPN

In its press release, the company announces its decision to close all its servers in India. In question, the obligation which is made to him to record and keep the data of connection during 180 days and other data relating to the identity during 5 years.

Surfshark believes that these obligations go against its very ethics and principle. Indeed, as he points out, a VPN is first and foremost “ an online privacy tool “intended for” ordinary users “. For Surfshark, complying with the new Indian regulations would compromise both its values and its technical base, because the infrastructure has been configured in such a way as to respect the privacy of its users.

More generally, Surfshark explains in its press release that India’s choice to hinder ” internet freedom is damaging both to this industry and to the privacy of people in the country. To back up its claim, the company reports that since 2004, 18 out of every 100 Indians have had their personal data stolen.

Indian virtual servers always available

Surfshark’s physical servers in India will be shut down shortly before the new law takes effect. Like ExpressVPN, Surfshark will continue to offer virtual Indian servers, also physically located in London and Singapore.

Indian users will still be able to connect to other servers outside the country. Inevitably, those who used Indian servers will notice a slight drop in performance, since these servers will no longer be physically present in the territory, but a few thousand kilometers away.
