After health, the CNIL is proposing a new “sandbox”, this time dedicated to the field of education. The goal? Select five projects which, according to the authority, will offer the best digital tools used in the educational sector, in accordance with the regulations of course.
In 2021, the CNIL (National Commission for Computing and Liberties) devoted its first sandbox to digital health and health data. Four innovative projects, private and public, were able to benefit from the support of the data policeman. The latter has notably focused on oncology prescription assistance, a virtual reality solution to combat eating disorders and federated learning by algorithms on research data. For 2022, the CNIL has this time decided to highlight the theme of digital tools used in the education sector.
Support from the CNIL that responds to current and economic issues
The choice of education is not due to chance, as one might suspect. This sector presents real current issues, with the question of the continuity of school and university education, which has already arisen on several occasions since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
There is also an economic issue, the famous EdTechs, these companies that combine education and digital and which have the wind in their sails in France and in Europe. The societal issue is also important, taking into account school inclusion and the rights of minors.
The CNIL believes that this sandbox will allow the education sector to better take ownership of these various issues, but also those relating to compliance with the GDPR, to offer the public offers that remain respectful of privacy. The sector will also be able to deploy trusted school and university solutions for users such as pupils, parents, students, teachers and establishments.
A call for projects to help 5 projects to develop in compliance with the GDPR
This year, the CNIL has decided to open its sandbox to five innovative projects. A call for projects has been launched and remains open until February 25, 2022. To make its choice among the candidate projects, the data constable will rely on four criteria. The project should be of interest to the public, show a strong interest in GDPR compliance, be in the design phase and raise interest in data protection issues raised by the project.
An evaluation committee, made up of members of the authority, will then meet to hear the people at the head of the projects which, in the eyes of the CNIL, best meet its priorities in terms of data protection and life. private. It is the president of the CNIL, Marie-Laure Denis, who will retain the 5 final projects.
At the end of the selection, the CNIL promises to support the winners until the end of the year to help them resolve the difficulties identified around data protection. It will put the project teams in contact with those of the CNIL to provide them with advice on a daily basis. The idea is not to provide winners with an IT architecture or test technique, but rather support for the implementation of the principle of privacy, at an early stage in the development of projects.
