The director of the animation department of the streaming service was recently landed and the company would like to focus on outside productions.

Netflix’s very poor financial results for the first quarter of 2022 had immediate consequences for future projects in development.

Original youth programs sacrificed to rely on known licenses

According to website information The Wrapthe director in charge of animation at Netflix Phil Rynad was thanked a few days ago by management.

The SVOD service wishes to refocus its activities on known licenses, in particular content produced by Dreamworks studios such as the series derived from the franchise Baby Boss.

As a result, several projects have been cancelled, such as the adaptation of Two Rascals by Roald Dahl, but also the series Toil and Trouble by Lauren Faust or the adaptation of the comic strip Good.

Many talents working for the “youth” category of the service have also jumped ship and joined competing studios. Many indeed complain that Netflix is doing the bare minimum in terms of promotion and advertising in order to more easily justify a cancellation based on poor audience figures.

Netflix would also cut into its live action film and series projects. We learn in parallel that the sequence of Bright, the 2017 fantasy film starring Will Smith has been permanently canceled after several years in development. The now famous slap of the actor on the stage of the Oscars would not be related to this decision, even if this incident must have certainly helped Netflix to make its decision.
