On October 22, 2021, Alec Baldwin accidentally killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust.

The weapon used contained live ammunition when it should have been loaded blank. The actor had defended himself by claiming not to have pressed the trigger and that the shot had gone off on its own because of a defective weapon.

After months of investigation, a report from the FBI’s forensic institute has delivered its verdict. According to this survey, relayed by ABC Newsthe shot couldn’t go off without someone pulling the trigger.

The responsibility of Alec Baldwin in the death of Halyna Hutchins is therefore engaged. “I would never point a gun at someone and pull the trigger, ever”had yet chanted the actor last December.

The ballistics experts of the American federal police carried out numerous experiments to come to this conclusion. During these tests, only one configuration allowed firing without pulling the trigger.

In this precise case, the hammer (part located at the back of the weapon, similar to the “dog”) was operated directly. This observation has been called “normal” by specialists in this type of firearms.

Based on the FBI ballistics report, authorities in New Mexico decided to classify the death of Halyna Hutchins as a “accident”.

“The examination showed no convincing evidence that the firearm was intentionally loaded with live ammunition on set. Based on all available information, the manner of death is instead classified as an accident”concluded the police.

The investigations are not yet complete. The sheriff’s office said it is still investigating Alec Baldwin’s phone records, some of which are still missing.

“Once our inspectors receive the tapes, they will examine them thoroughly for evidentiary purposes”concluded the local authorities.
