With the explosion in the practice of cycling, whether muscular or electric, companies and young entrepreneurs are not short of ideas for strengthening the product offer and embarking on the adventure of cycling. This is the case of Mastix, from Germany, who appealed to the community to finance his electric BMX project via the Kickstarter platform.

And the least we can say is that the success was quickly there: it took less than 24 hours to reach the goal of 20,000 euros, underlines InsideEV. At the time of writing these lines, more than 33,000 euros have been collected. But what is this trendy cycle really wearing and to which category of bikes does it belong?

A European version at 25 km/h

First, the term BMX should be tempered. Certainly, the Mastix One has the style, the skills and at least one key feature: the 20-inch wheels, which are very frequently found on muscular BMXs. On the other hand, the latter are generally devoid of brakes.

However, the BMX One opts for hydraulic disc brakes signed Shimano. In short, it seems totally normal to equip an electric vehicle with such a device for simple safety measures related to the speed at which the assistance can propel you. In this case, the European model spins at a speed of 25 km/h.

The Kickstarter page lists more powerful versions reserved for the United States, but not compliant with European laws. Another important point and not the least: the presence of an accelerator, mentioned only once in the description of the product. Here, the Mastix One places itself in a delicate position.

With an accelerator, it could very well be classified in the category of light cyclomobiles: this type of vehicle – formerly called draisienne – has become legal in France since January 2022, but strict rules must be respected. For example, their length should be between 135 and 165 centimeters.

Mastix gives no details on the dimensions of its electric machine, even if its size seems to aim for the famous legal fork. We contacted the brand to find out more.

Price and delivery date

For the rest, the Mastix One is equipped with an aluminum frame, a Shimano 7-speed transmission, very wide tires to absorb shocks or even a suspension fork with a travel of 100 mm, the everything for 25 kg on the scale. A Bafang motor invites itself to the hub of the rear wheel, coupled to a battery offering 75 kilometers of theoretical autonomy.

Its first price starts at 1645 euros, but you will be charged an additional 200 euros for delivery in France scheduled for January 2023. We repeat it however: make sure that it respects the legal dimensions inherent in light mopeds.

This very colorful electric BMX clearly wants to be noticed
