Android 13 leaks: New screensavers & Linux emulation


The leaks about the upcoming Android 13 are not ebbing away. While we were still reporting on the first developer version a few days ago, today there were two more news about the operating system. On the one hand, the screensavers should get a major update and on the other hand, Android 13 could give us access to new operating systems thanks to virtual machines

The current Android 12 operating system is not even available for all common smartphones and the news about Android 13 is already piling up. In addition to functions such as the photo picker and data transfer by tapping, another adjustment to the user interface has now been discovered in the code of the new operating system .

Lines of code containing the word “dream” were discovered. This is the name for all screensavers in the more recent versions of Android. In recent years there have been hardly any changes in terms of screensavers, but this time it could be different. Because it seems that Google wants to bring the “Complications” API to smartphones. We already know this API from Android smartwatches and it ensures that you can see data such as the battery indicator on the lock screen. There are no first pictures yet, but it should only be a matter of time.

Use Android 13 for virtual machines

A short explanation in advance. A virtual machine is a working environment within an operating system in which you can start other operating systems. Or to put it more simply: Such a program is used to run Windows on a MacOS computer, for example. Android developer Danny Lin has now published screenshots on Twitter showing such a virtual machine on a Pixel 6.

On the screenshots you can see a Linux partition on the one hand and a Windows 11 version on the other. The virtual machine runs so smoothly that Lin even the first doom could play on his smartphone. It’s all made possible by the better virtualization introduced with Android 13. The operating system uses a kernel-based virtual machine that works with a common hypervisor.

This could make some tasks much easier on Android devices. However, the better virtualization enables further advantages. It primarily serves to increase the security of digital rights.

Here’s a little anecdote: I loved Linux when I was studying computer science and I have to admit that I’m still in love with Ubuntu today. Using a fully-fledged Linux on the Android phone would certainly be an absolute dream for many programmers and Linux fans.
