Around 140 people are waiting in the evening for a train that will take them out of the embattled Kherson. Then Russia attacks the train station. A police officer dies on site and there are injuries.

Russia fired rockets at the train station in the city of Kherson in southern Ukraine. At the time of the attack, many civilians were waiting there for an evacuation train, said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in his evening video speech. The number of dead and injured is still being determined. Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko wrote on Telegram that there were 140 civilians in the station. A police officer was killed and two other police officers were injured by shrapnel bullets. There are said to be two injured civilians.

According to the authorities, more than 100 civilians were taken by bus from the town near the front to Mykolaiv. According to Ukrainian Railways, trains scheduled to travel to Kherson from Kramatorsk, Lviv and Kiev will also be diverted to Mykolaev. The damage to the station and the affected train is currently being investigated.

Kherson is the capital of the Kherson region of the same name in southern Ukraine. Shortly after the start of the war almost two years ago, it was occupied by Russian troops, but was liberated again by the Ukrainians a few months later. Since then, people in Kherson have continued to face heavy shelling from the Russian army, which continues to control areas on the opposite side of the Dnipro River.

During the night, Kherson and the southern Ukrainian port city of Odessa were again targets of Russian combat drones. The anti-aircraft defense in the two cities went into action and explosions were heard. The Russian military had the drones fly over the Black Sea.
