All the elite of British cinema gathered on Sunday February 18, 2024 in London to reward the best films of the year, on the occasion of the 77th BAFTAs. And if Oppenheimer was the big winner of the evening presented by David Tennant, the feature film by Yorgos Lanthimos Poor Creatures also stood out by winning several statuettes, including that of best actress for Emma Stone.
On the way to the Oscars
Oppenheimer continues to win the most coveted statuettes of award ceremonies by adding seven BAFTAs to its purse: best film, director, actor (Cillian Murphy), actor in a supporting role (Robert Downey Jr.), editing, photography and original music.
As it also shone at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards and Directors Guild Awards, Christopher Nolan’s film’s path to the Oscars seems clear, in particular to win Best Feature Film.
Things also seem to be going pretty well for Poor Creatures, who obtained five victories last night (out of 11 nominations). With this new statuette in her pocket, Emma Stone has a serious chance of winning the Oscar for best actress next March. For its part, the French film Anatomy of a fall won the award for best original screenplay.
However, one film created a surprise: American Fiction. By awarding director-screenwriter Cord Jefferson, for whom this is his first film, the prize for best adapted screenplay (the only category in which he was nominated), the jury responded ©compensated a talent that no one really saw coming. Especially since it was an American film in competition with four British films (Without ever knowing us, Oppenheimer, Poor Creatures And The Area of Interest).
Streaming platforms on the sidelines
As for streaming services, the London evening was less prolific. Whether it’s Netflix (with 12 nominations, including seven for Maestro), Apple (with nine nominations for Killers of the Flower Moon) or even Amazon (and its five nominations for Saltburn), the platforms left empty-handed.
Another big loser of the evening, Greta Gerwig’s film barbiewhich despite five nominations and its status as the most popular film at the box office in 2023, has not received a single award.
