“Barbie” continues to chase record after record. A milestone has now been reached: Greta Gerwig is the most successful director in the USA.

The hype about the current “Barbie” film by director Greta Gerwig (40) is unbroken. As “The Hollywood Reporter” now reports, the film, starring Margot Robbie (33) and Ryan Gosling (42), has now reached another milestone. With her work, Gerwig is now the most successful director of all time at the US box office. Most recently, “Frozen 2” was overtaken by Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, which has so far grossed $477.4 million (around EUR 435 million).

“Barbie” is currently at a box office of around 500 million US dollars – but the trend is still rising. Incidentally, “Barbie” is already the 20th most successful film in the USA of all time. Gerwig is also now the top-grossing female director of a live-action film at the global box office, overtaking Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s Captain Marvel.

Right from the start, “Barbie” broke many records at the box office

“Barbie” broke numerous records right from the start. The film grossed 155 million US dollars (around 140 million euros) on its first weekend in the USA. Never in the history of Hollywood has a woman-directed film garnered more early box office sales in the United States than “Barbie.” Patty Jenkins’ (52) “Wonder Woman” from 2017 held the record with 103 million US dollars. “Captain Marvel”, which has two directors from Anna Boden (43) and Ryan Fleck (46), “only” came to 153 million US dollars.

“Barbie” also broke other, smaller records according to “The Hollywood Reporter”: So the 155 million dollars is the best grossing result in a first weekend for the two leading actors Ryan Gosling (42) and Margot Robbie (33). On top of that, it’s the best start for a toy-based film (previously “Transformers 3: Dark Side of the Moon” at around $116 million) and the strongest first three days for a non-ending Warner film is from the DC Universe or is a sequel.

“Barbie” could possibly become the most successful film of 2023 in the next few weeks. Currently, that spot is held by the Nintendo adventure starring Mario and Luigi, with $1.3 billion in global grossing. However, “Barbie” has already broken the one-billion barrier…
