Bayern coach sees yellow and red: Referee Turpin stuns Tuchel

Bayern coach sees yellow and red
Referee Turpin stunned Tuchel

FC Bayern is looking for luck – and can’t find it in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals against Manchester City. Thomas Tuchel struggles with numerous decisions by the referee. Because of complaining, he even has to go to the stands with yellow-red.

Thomas Tuchel was in a good mood until the interview was about referee Clement Turpin. “Grade six, from the first minute,” scolded the FC Bayern coach on DAZN after the good 1-1 (0-0) win against Manchester City. While Munich’s performance was good, the result was not. Because of the 0: 3 defeat in the first leg, the record champions are thrown out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals.

For Tuchel, that was again difficult to accept. As in the first leg, he struggled with the result. “We had them back on the hook, even more than in Manchester. I’m very satisfied. In 180 minutes we didn’t get any encouragement or luck at all,” said the coach annoyed and was back with Turpin. Every small decision was made against his Munich team, said Tuchel. His team could have used one or the other whistle, one or the other free kick. Especially to get the momentum. “If you have to catch up from 0: 3, then you also need a decision for yourself. If you don’t get the small ones all the time, then it adds up,” said Tuchel.

Tuchel Turpin showed on the pitch how much he struggled with the referee’s performance. After a violent hold, almost choking, by Aymeric Laporte against Kingsley Coman, the City player received a yellow card, but the Bayern coach also received a yellow card, who had complained repeatedly and angrily. The French referee didn’t look confident even after two disputed penalties and a recalled dismissal against Dayot Upamecano. The Bayern defender, who, like in the first leg, did not have a good evening, initially saw red after a foul on Erling Haaland (19th), but then the linesman raised the flag – offside and Upamecano was allowed to continue.

Penalties cause excitement

A good quarter of an hour later, Upemecano was again in focus. In all efforts to keep his hands away in the penalty area when trying to block, his left arm was next to his body. The ball was easily deflected with the elbow. This did not have any significant influence on the trajectory. There was still a penalty, but Erling Haaland missed it, but then later made it 1-0 for City (57th), ice cold after a fine counterattack. Upamecano slipped in a duel with the Norwegian, then he had a clear path. Next excitement: the penalty for Munich. Mané shot the ball at Manuel Akanji’s arm from a very short distance. Joshua Kimmich didn’t care, he stayed cool and made it 1-1.

After a committed and good but harmless performance by his team, Kimmich mourned the great chance of a surprise. “We really wanted to take the lead. We had very good chances. We needed the lead against City to shake them. It’s very annoying that we didn’t make it 1-0,” said the Munich midfielder. “If you look at both games, it wasn’t about will. We didn’t play well for 30, 35 minutes. We weren’t the worse team, but we’re going well. It was realistic to score three goals. But then you have to make chances.”
