Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics: who are the French flag bearers?

As the Beijing Winter Olympics kick off on February 4, the three flag bearers of the French delegation have been chosen. Among them, a slalom star, a multi-medalist in halfpipe skiing and a cross-country skiing pro.

Only a few more days until the games launch. On February 4, the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics, which are taking place this year in Beijing, Yanqing and Zhangjiakou, will be broadcast at 1 p.m. French time. A moment eagerly awaited by the athletes present, who decided to ignore the controversy surrounding these games, while several organizations are calling for a boycott of the Olympics to protest against China’s human rights record, pointing in particular to the treatment of Uighurs in the Xinjiang region. France, however, has decided to send a delegation there. And the flag bearers have been named.

To raise the tricolor flag, the honor was given to Tessa Worley and Kevin Rolland, as well as Benjamin Daviet for the Paralympic Winter Games. Giant slalom specialist, Tessa Worley was crowned world champion in the discipline in 2013 and 2017. At 32, she hopes to win her first Olympic medal. Kevin Rolland stands out as a strong symbol since he came close to death in 2019 during a world record attempt. Multi-medal winner in halfpipe skiing, including a bronze medal in Sochi in 2014, the skier from La Plagne will compete in his third Olympic Games.

How were the flag bearers chosen?

Benjamin Daviet was chosen to carry the flag at the Paralympic Games. Triple gold medalist in cross-country skiing and biathlon in 2018 in Pyeongchang, he returned with a total of five medals, including three gold and two silver. As with Tokyo last year, the French National Olympic and Sports Committee has decided that a duo (a man and a woman) will carry the French flag at the Olympics. For the first time, the general public was asked to vote after a pre-selection of 69 athletesestablished by the federations concerned, namely skiing, ice sports and hockey, according to the prize lists and the embodiment of the Olympic values.
