The Korean Netflix series “Squid Game”, in English “Squid Game”, is causing a sensation worldwide. In all countries in which “Squid Game” is available, the series can be found at number 1 on the current streaming charts. That has never happened before. It is estimated that Squid Game could be the most watched series of all time on Netflix.
In the series, 456 desperate people are invited to a mysterious competition that consists of several traditional Korean children’s games. All participants are financially on the brink in their lives and now have the chance to win 45.6 billion won – the equivalent of around 36 million francs. But after a short time it becomes clear: If you don’t win, you will die. Players must risk their own lives and that of others to win the jackpot.
Belgian school warns
Because of the bloodthirsty scenes, the series is only officially released from the age of 18. But that doesn’t prevent many children from at least looking at excerpts from “Squid Game” – with drastic consequences.
A Belgian school is now warning parents about the series. In the past few days, the children had re-enacted the games from the series on the playground. “The loser was beaten up,” the school writes on Facebook.
You are now counting on the support of your parents, the school management continues. Students who hit other children would be sanctioned accordingly. “Of course, the associated children’s games can still be played.”
Demand for Vans shoes explodes
The series is not only causing a stir in the break areas. Retailers are also noticing the huge hype surrounding the “Squid Game”. Apparently the demand for white Vans sneakers is said to have increased massively – these play a prominent role in “Squid Game”. Many people now apparently want to buy the clothes belonging to the series.
In the country of origin, South Korea, there are already the first cafés that are based on the series. Some actors from the series have also been hired as advertising media for brands such as Louis Vuitton. (zis)
