Bicycle trailers at Stiftung Warentest: The best models at a glance

In an older issue (7/2019), Stiftung Warentest put several bicycle trailers through their paces. We last checked the results in February 2022 and updated the information.

The experts from Stiftung Warentest have extensively tested 12 bicycle trailers, including nine with space for two children and three single-seaters. Criteria included the safe and suitable transport of small children, the driving experience for parents, and braking and cornering behavior. The seating comfort, the suspension and the ventilation were also of great importance for the Stiftung Warentest.

The test result: three bicycle trailers received the grade “good” and are recommended. Test winner, both in the one and two-seater, is the Thule Chariot Cross 1 (for a child) and cross 2 (two-seater). Both models impress with good visibility, a backrest that can be adjusted with one hand and very good durability. The Thule Chariot Cross 1 is also particularly light and can therefore be driven smoothly. The experts deducted points because the roll bar/slider cannot be adjusted well. He was also able to score points in the test Hamax Outback. The trailer is particularly robust and offers very good braking and driving characteristics, which is also due to its heavy 21 kilograms. Shortcomings: The Hamax bicycle trailer is only moderately rainproof. In addition, it can sometimes tip backwards if it is unfavorably loaded in buggy mode.
