Unusual Wound: Fury cancels giant fight

Boxing fans will have to wait even longer for the big duel between Tyson Fury and Alexander Uysk. Fury sustains a wound during training. The 35-year-old Brit apologizes to everyone involved and promises to find a new date as quickly as possible.

The highly anticipated boxing showdown for the undisputed heavyweight crown between Tyson Fury and Alexander Usyk has fallen through. Organizers said the Brit suffered an unusual wound above his right eye during training for the fight, which was scheduled to take place on February 17 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Fury needed medical attention immediately and the cut was stitched up. Since the injury requires a longer period of healing, a duel in mid-February is ruled out, it was said.

“I’m devastated, I’ve been preparing for this fight for so long and I was in great shape,” Fury said. “I feel bad for all the people involved in this huge event. Once everything heals, I will work diligently towards the rescheduled date. I can only apologize to everyone involved.”

A new date has not yet been set. It was only in mid-November that Fury and the Ukrainian Usyk agreed on February 17th. December 23, 2023 had already been agreed upon, but this date was unrealistic anyway, as Fury had only been in the ring at the end of October in a show fight with MMA star Francis Ngannou and revealed some problems there.

Fury’s world title according to the WBC association’s version was not at stake against Ngannou. The Brit (35 fights, 34 wins, one draw) wants to be crowned undisputed world champion against the Ukrainian WBA, WBO and IBF champion Usyk (21 fights, 21 wins). His compatriot Lennox Lewis last won this status in 1999. At that time, the holder of the WBA, WBC and IBF belts was considered undisputed.
