Sixteen million tourists are expected in Paris for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2024, declared Pierre Rabadan, deputy mayor of Paris, on France Bleu. Many wonder what means will be deployed by the authorities and the town hall to avoid excesses during such an event? Although no technological solution has been communicated, the AEF reports that the Thales group has won a contract for the integration of video surveillance, intrusion detection and hypervision equipment.
The defense and security giant does not provide any information on the solutions provided to the organizing committee for the 2024 Olympic Games.
Thales nevertheless has technologies already deployed in large cities (Dubai, Mexico) or during major events (Pilgrimage to Mecca) to alert the authorities. The group presented us with the “Smart Digital Platform”, a dashboard, to collect and evaluate different types of data (videos, meters, sounds, texts, etc.) from thousands of sources: cameras, sensors, connected devices, networks social, open source data etc.
Concretely, operators have access to a vast 3D map of a city or a site, which offers a multitude of information in real time. Road traffic, crowd movements or the level of pollution are all information provided by the software, but safety naturally remains the primary issue. For example, an attack will be reported to the officers, who will be able to view the surveillance cameras to monitor the situation and alert the police.
Security solutions already adopted in the Middle East
A drone flying illegally over the city is spotted and tracked by the software. The AI will attempt to anticipate its threat level and determine its trajectory to plan its interception. The Ministry of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, declared that “20 malicious drones” were neutralized during the Rugby World Cup, without specifying the threat posed by these devices.
If the authorities accept it, the platform can have access to videos from surveillance drones or “body cams” from law enforcement.
The Dubai metropolitan area in the United Arab Emirates has been using the Smart Digital Platform since 2019. The city uses it, among other things, to manage its road traffic and public transport. Mecca and in particular the great Muslim pilgrimage is also under the control of Thales’ solution. Saudi Arabia has also adopted the platform for the Al-Ula archaeological and tourist site in the desert. However, the stakes are likely to be higher for an event like the Olympic Games.
