DISAPPEARANCE – Philippe Vallancien died Monday at the age of 83. He had collaborated in France Evening, to Worldto Sunday newspaper but also at Figaro and at Figaro Magazine between 1970 and 2000.
Cartoonist and press cartoonist Calvi died at the age of 83 due to natural death on Monday April 11, 2022, his two children said in an email to AFP on Tuesday.
Born on September 3, 1938 in Besançon into a family of doctors, Calvi – whose real name is Philippe Vallancien – had collaborated in France Evening in the early 1970s, then Worldto Sunday newspaperand, until the 2000s, Figaro to illustrate the political pages and Figaro Magazine, said his son, Grégoire Vallancien. Calvi then set to work in color for his collaboration with Le Figaro Magazine. His drawings will now all be in color except in the daily newspapers. For 5 years, he had a blog The Club of Mediapart .
Calvi had produced courtroom sketches during various trials, including that of Klaus Barbie, head of the Gestapo in Lyon during the Occupation, sentenced to life imprisonment in 1987, and Maurice Papon, sentenced in 1998 for complicity in crimes against humanity for his role in the deportation of Jews between 1942 and 1944.

Cartoons and comics
In 1988, he received the Grand Prize for political drawing from Épinal. In 2004, Calvi proposed to Jean-Louis Debré, then President of the National Assembly, to put on an exhibition of political cartoons at the Assembly itself. The exhibition “The Caricature enters the Assembly” will be a great success until being held at the Palace of Versailles.

He had also published several comics, including three albums featuring the character of Astrobald.
