Connect Apple Music to Alexa: Here’s how it works

HOW TO LISTEN TO AND STREAM MUSIC WITH ALEXA

Apple Music offers millions of songs on demand – and with Amazon’s Alexa also on demand: This is how you connect the accounts and hear the entire song selection on your Echo speaker.

Apple Music is part of the Cupertino empire and accordingly at least all Apple disciples are familiar with it. For some time now, Apple Music has been offering around a hundred million songs in hi-fi quality at the same price as before, which is a particularly tempting argument for users with AirPlay-enabled headphones.

Listen and stream music with Alexa: Here’s how

To listen to music via Alexa, you need an Alexa-enabled speaker and a suitable music streaming service. Here’s how to connect the two.

Apple Music’s user interface isn’t nearly as intuitive as Spotify’s, and the algorithm for song suggestions is still inferior to that of the market leader. However, those who use many Apple services will be charmed even more with the Apple One combined subscription.

While Amazon’s Echo speakers aren’t a flagship for lossless audio streaming, playing songs via voice commands to Alexa is handy for Apple users too. This is also possible with all of Amazon’s Echo devices – because Apple Music is among the few audio streaming services that allow a direct Alexa connection.

The most important Alexa commands for Apple Music

The following voice commands are examples of how you can now use Apple Music via Alexa. Requests for specific song titles, playlists or entire genres are possible:

“Alexa, play ‘Mama’ by Genesis on Apple Music”, “Alexa, play Cool Jazz on Apple Music”, “Alexa, start my playlist ‘Dinner Music’ on Apple Music”

Tip: So that you don’t always have to mention Apple Music in your request, you can also set up Apple Music as the default service in the Alexa app under “Music and Podcasts”.

Can Apple Music also be used for free via Alexa?

Since Apple Music, unlike competitors like Spotify, does not have a slimmed-down free subscription, the service cannot actually be paired with Alexa for free and listened to via Echo devices. An exception is the free trial period, which gives you access to the full functionality of Apple Music once per Apple ID for a limited time. During this time, Apple Music can also be linked to Alexa for free.

Amazon Alexa: How to switch accounts with Apple Music

If you haven’t set up different profiles in your Alexa app, you can still switch accounts on Apple Music, which can be accessed through Alexa. All you have to do is disable the Apple Music skill, enable it again, and sign in with a different Apple ID.

If several profiles in the household are registered via Alexa, the Apple Music account can be easily linked to the right user by creating voice IDs. All profile users only have to register individually with their Apple ID in the Alexa app. Alexa then does everything else without any further action on your part.
