Switzerland is cooling down – and has been since May 2020. It is now around 1.5 degrees cooler. According to “SRF Meteo” it was almost too cool across the country compared to the years 1981 to 2010. The temperatures were therefore below the range one had expected based on the earlier temperatures.
Temperatures in Switzerland have dropped significantly since the end of May 2020. For example, the temperature in Basel for the last 12 months since May 2020 has been 12.39 degrees. At the end of October this year, this moving average was only 10.82 degrees. So it’s getting colder.
Cooling off throughout Switzerland – also in the south
According to “SRF Meteo”, this cooling affects almost all of Switzerland. It has become 1.6 degrees cooler in Zurich. In Sion the mean value at the end of August was even 10.61 degrees, the lowest value for Sion since January 2014.
It is also cooling down in the south of Switzerland. In Lugano it is around 1 degree cooler compared to the time between the months of June 2019 to May 2020.
Does that mean global warming will stop? No, the cooling is just a fluctuation. According to “SRF Meteo”, such deviations occur again and again, for example in the months from June 2006 to May 2007, one of the warmest phases in Switzerland. (euc)
