US artists are suing AI developers

In order to further develop artificial intelligence, it has to be trained – with the help of huge data sets. Because artistic works are also used for this, comedian Sarah Silverman and two authors are now suing the companies OpenAI and Meta.

US comedian Sarah Silverman and two other authors have sued ChatGPT developer OpenAI for allegations of copyright infringement. In the lawsuit filed in a California state court, the three plaintiffs allege that Open AI used their books to train artificial intelligence (AI) without their consent. The works are protected by copyright.

Silverman and authors Christopher Golden and Richard Kadrey also sued Facebook parent company Meta. Here, too, the accusation is that their works were used to develop artificial intelligence. The material used by OpenAI and Meta “is derived from copyrighted works – including plaintiffs’ books – copied by OpenAI and Meta without consent, without attribution and without compensation,” the attorneys said.

In the development of artificial intelligence, huge amounts of data are evaluated to train the programs. In the meantime, the complaints from authors against this approach are increasing. Success in court could limit tech companies’ ability to develop AI. OpenAI declined to comment on the lawsuit when asked. Meta initially did not respond to a request.
