Despite Corona, an illegal carnival party took place in Saxony over the weekend. In the middle of the pandemic, hundreds of people gathered to celebrate – until the police arrived.

Dressing up, clinking glasses, skiing a little and partying, yes, such a winter carnival party can certainly be fun. If we weren't living in a pandemic. The Kanervalszeit seems to bring some people again to the limits of legality – or to let them be exceeded far. The Saxony police reported a massive corona violation for the weekend.

In the Erzgebirgskreis, a big carnival celebration is said to have taken place in Marienberg on Sunday. The police were made aware of the party through an anonymous tip. When the officers arrived at the scene, the suspicion was confirmed. According to the police, around 100 winter sports enthusiasts are said to have celebrated Carnival in a field on a toboggan slope. Neither distance regulations should have been observed nor masks were worn.

According to a press release from the police, the costumed people celebrated "Close to you", went skiing and tobogganing lively. The skis are said to have been converted into an escape object: When the celebrants noticed the police, some of them fled on skis in different directions and insulted the officers.

The carnival guest who had become absent has now been caught. After questioning witnesses, he was able to be identified, in this way the police officers hope to identify other celebrants. Several complaints were made against the young man – for insults, sedition and violations of the Corona Protection Ordinance.

After the federal-state conference last week, private meetings, let alone parties, are still prohibited. Members of a household are only allowed to meet someone who does not live in the household – the 100 celebrants thus massively violated the Corona measures.
