21 million Germans, a good quarter of the population, refuse to be vaccinated. Many of them dispute the warnings of virologists and the scientific evidence. If they do not deny the existence of Covid and refuse to be put in the same bag as the followers of conspiracy theories and other far-right agitators baptized “Querdenker”, these skeptics often come from the well-educated middle classes. They are part of a very German tradition that dates back to the Romantic period, to the “Lebensreform” movement at the end of the 19th century.and century and experienced its golden age in the 1920s.
