managed to win over $215,000. A performance that has become increasingly rare in recent years.
In recent weeks, several small-scale mining operations have successfully mined bitcoin. A fact that has become increasingly rare in recent years, however, due to the ever-increasing difficulty of mining cryptocurrency, which only benefited major operations requiring ultra-powerful machines.
Using tiny USB hubs, miners snatch bitcoin solo
The latest example is from a participating USB miner at solo.ckpool.org. The site offers ” no frills, no hassle, 2% anonymous solo bitcoin mining fee for everyone “. Equipped with a USB rig, at a hashrate of around 8.3 terahashes per second (TH/s), the miner solved a block and earned over $215,000 worth of BTC.
USB platforms are available on sites like Amazon or Bitcoin Merch. The one used by the miner has a hashrate of 86 TH/s, but was only running at 1/10th of its performance at the time the block was solved. To contextualize this performance, remember that Bitmain announced the release of the Antminer S19 Pro+ Hyd, capable of reaching a hashrate of around 199 TH/s.
Is Solo Bitcoin Mining Back?
If this performance is rare, it seems to have benefited several solitary miners. According to bitcoin.com, small trades won between $260,000 and $270,000 for the lucky ones in January. From there to imagining a strong comeback of solitary bitcoin mining, there is only one step.
And yet, this profit seems to remain a very rare opportunity, and there is little point in mining bitcoin alone. The process remains very resource-intensive. And even solo miners benefit from fairly expensive specialized hardware.
Bitcoin remains very difficult to mine, and it’s not getting any better. Also, the rewards today would not be as great, after the 34% drop in value seen last month in the price of Bitcoin.
